A cliff-backed beach with no road in. Hot springs above the treeline. An island half an hour offshore. We find the place first, then build a night of house music around what it does to you — the set curated for that terrain, that hour, that light, and the artist chosen for the same reasons.

Most nights out could happen anywhere. Ours couldn't. We start with a place that takes some effort to reach and does something to you when you arrive, then ask what should be playing there and who should be playing it. The setting sets the tempo, the hour sets the mood, and the music is chosen to belong to both. Capacity stays small because these places ask for it — you come by boat, or up a mountain road, and that is already part of the night.

We are not trying to be everywhere. A place earns a date when it does three things: asks something of you to get there, holds a sound system without losing what made it worth reaching, and does something with the light at a particular hour. Almost nowhere does all three.
